RIO MARANON “THE GRAND CANYON OF THE ANDES”

Named “The Golden Serpent” by Ciro Alegria, a famous Peruvian writer who lived on its banks, the Marañón River snakes its way nearly 1800 kilometers from its origins in the Andean Mountains before joining the Amazon. At risk of being dammed, the Marañón offers an incredible diversity of both whitewater and experience for paddlers of all skill levels. This autumn, two disparate teams ventured into the so-called “Grand Canyon of the Andes” to experience the Marañón’s chocolate waters for themselves. Ripe with mangoes and cultural exchange, both the upper and lower stretches of the Marañón provided plenty of reason to explore this Peruvian classic.
