DOCTOR RIVER WHAT'S UP DOC? WHAT IS THE ROTATOR CUFF AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? Four very small but important muscles make up the rotator cuff: the supraspinatus, the infraspinatus, the teres minor, and the subscapularis. These small muscles work with other larger muscles such as the latimuss dorsi, the pectoralis muscles, and the teres major to allow the amazing range of motion in the shoulder and keep the humeral head where it's supposed to be. The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body. While the shoulder is capable of very complex movements in many planes of direction, equally it is susceptible to injury from many different directions.
