A huge snow pack plus heavy and never-ending rains led to a spring to remember all over Europe. While these conditions brought amazing paddling conditions for many paddlers across the European continent throughout this past spring and early summer, it also, sadly, led to an increased number of paddling accidents on the water, and some catastrophic floods and mud slides destroying roads, valleys, houses, and occasionally entire villages. Maybe the most notable is the flood that completely destroyed the village of La Berarde at the top of the Venéon Valley, where 70 % of the houses are now gone, either destroyed or buried. This dramatic scene was not unique; other areas in Switzerland, Austria, and Italy were severely impacted as well.…
