Amongst the current generation of kayakers in Southwest BC, the Upper Ryan River in Pemberton has been little more than folklore. 15 years ago it was known as one of the steepest and stoutest sections in the area. Then, as the put-in road became more and more overgrown with trees, the Upper Ryan faded from people's minds and went dormant. Five years ago a new road was put in that allowed kayakers to access a good chunk of the lower section of the river, and when paddling it with significantly more water than one would for the Upper, it quickly became a classic.
