The first edition of the Río Ara Race took place on the 11th and 12th of May and was an unexpected success. The race was organized by local kayakers and the whitewater kayak club Aguas Bravas Gállego. More than 30 participants from different regions of Spain, France, the UK, Russia, and Germany came to attend this event on the unique and pristine last free-flowing river of the Spanish Pyrenees. The race was split into two categories: slalom, sprint, and long team race. The master (pro) participants ran two sprint runs through the classic section called “Puente de los Navarros,” finishing with the famous rapid “La Chicane.” Due to the natural diurnal, the river was a bit higher in the afternoon for the slalom.
