While short days and frosty mornings are typical signs of winter approaching, the annual Waip Out event has come to mark the start of the cold season for some New Zealand kayakers. The third annual event was held this year over the weekend of May 4th-5th on the Waipori River, just outside of Dunedin in the lower South Island. The event continues to grow each year, with over 70 paddlers of all abilities participating in the races, social laps, and party this time around. Saturday kicked off with plenty of sunny morning laps and a fabulous barbeque sponsored by Manawa Energy, the power company providing recreational flows for the weekend.
