Downwind standup paddle foiling is the current new craze. With new boards and foils making it easier than ever to paddle up on small swells or flat water, foiling downwinders have become much more accessible. What gear do you need? What should I avoid? Let me answer these questions for you. Managing expectations The first thing I tell people when they ask me about starting to learn downwind paddle foiling and flat-water paddle-ups is to manage their expectations. The guys and girls in the videos make it look easy, and the new boards and large pumping foils help a lot. However, it is still challenging to learn, even if you have some experience with pump foiling or stand up paddling.
