Progression on the Indus Face to face with Malupa

For years, the Rondu Gorge of the Indus has been the benchmark for paddlers looking to test their limits. Each team has been humbled by the grandeur of the mountains and the sheer force of the rapids below, carefully picking and choosing which ones they dared to run. Group after group, year after year, every un-run rapid was paddled until only two were left. Evan Moore, Johnny Chase, Carson Lindsay, and Dane Jackson didn't set out to take on the least-portaged run of the Indus to date, but they knew it was possible. When Dane saw the line at Malupa, and ran it, their possibility became a reality, opening the doors of progress a little wider.

The Indus. Just thinking about this river is enough to give almost any class V kayaker chills, but, for those who have been there, it evokes a flood of emotions and memories of a far-off place where you were once so present. The river begins from a perennial spring near Mount Kailash, one of the holiest mountains in the Himalayas, which holds religious significance in Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. As it cuts through the tallest mountain range in the world and the northern reaches of India, the river grows, gradually descending to Skardu's high desert valley. Here the roughly 90-mile journey through the Rondu Gorge begins. Deep in the canyon of the Rondu Gorge lie some of the biggest and most powerful rapids ever run in a kayak. The water feels different…
