Many people are familiar with our role in protecting and restoring rivers across the country and our insistence that to truly protect these important places we need river lovers who enjoy our public lands and waters in a meaningful way. Lesser-known is that our mission not only instructs us to promote and contribute to the enjoyment of rivers, it is specific in its direction to encourage their "safe enjoyment."
When American White water began to establis hits role in the burgeoning river recreation movement in the United States during the mid-1950s, one of our organization's main contributions to the community was standardizing river ratings and reporting on the latest safety techniques and ideas.
