WHEN TRAGEDY STRIKES As much as most kayakers like to deny it, we are involved in a high-risk sport. Since the loss of a dear friend, Juan Antonio de Ugarte, on the river in November 2014, I have often asked myself this question: Do we take too many risks and is it worth it? It can be easy to forget that the river is always dangerous. A good friend of mine, and a highly respected WWRT instructor, repeats this fact throughout a course. He is right – flowing water is a treacherous element to play in, no matter how skilled you are. Yet the decisions we have to make for ourselves while running exceedingly harder rapids, and the teamwork needed to make it happen, make us grow as individuals. That…
