LOWER BACK PAIN Lower back pain is a part of many kayakers’ lives at some point. Traumatic injury to the back can cause one set of problems depending on the type of injury sustained, but chronic lower back pain is a more common occurrence for paddlers over time (this series does not address traumatic injury). Since this is a complex problem, I asked for input from Trish Dahl, a physical therapist who has specialized in back care and seen many paddlers in her career. The lower back is made up of the lumbar spine and is found between the ribs and the pelvis. It is responsible for connecting the upper body to the pelvis and legs.
