PASSING THE TORCH

In this column, EJ reflects on passing his whitewater legacy on to his son, watching, but not worrying, as Dane goes to new heights and new falls.

By now, you might have heard of Dane Jackson. To most, he is a figurehead in kayaking, one that seems to keep setting the bar higher and keep the images coming faster at an ever-accelerating pace. To me, he is the kid that not long ago, overcame incredible odds as a miracle child who weighed less than two pounds and had to work his way up one determined step at a time. “THE MONSTER WAS UNLEASHED.MY JOB NOW WAS TO KEEP HIM SAFE UNTIL HE WAS ABLE TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS.” When he was born, I was charging hard in slalom, freestyle, extreme racing, and hoped that he and Emily, three years older, would one day join me on the river.
