About a year ago, I realized for the first time what my good friend Rata meant when she said, ‘You’re cool for a pro-kayaker.” It was also the first time I was ashamed to be called a “prokayaker,” whatever that means. At any rate, we were in India for the Malabar River Festival and, “pro” or not, pretty much everyone had footrot. Monsoon season will do that. While I had spent a day coaching a clinic for Indian paddlers, some of the boys had opened a nice section of whitewater. In other terms, they had been out exploring and scored a “Sick First D.”They put-in at a bridge, spent two hours on a section that was mostly read and run, with one mandatory chicken line but no portages, and a take-out…
