FREESTYLE IN THE OLYMPICS….

In this column, EJ shares his opinion on freestyle kayaking potentially becoming an Olympic discipline.

If you know me, you know that my position on freestyle kayaking being in the Olympics is a consistent, “NO.” I care too much about the sport to want that to happen. Now, if it were in the Olympics, it would be a good thing for the select few who would get to compete. The Olympics was one of my favorite personal experiences in slalom, and it would be awesome to know that my kids might have a chance to have that experience. However, slalom kayaking used to take place predominantly on natural rivers. In my opinion, it was a much better sport in the 80s and 90s when I was doing it- before it became a sport of artificial courses. No longer are the main people training for slalom…
