SCIMITAR Beyond the Abyss

Nestled in the Dehcho Region of Canada’s Northwest Territories lies Nahanni National Park. Here, contrasting with smooth, green forest surrounding it are the rugged limestone walls of Scimitar Canyon. Within its expansive Boreal forest, the Ram River’s spectacular Scimitar Canyon breaches the limestone Ram Plateau. For over 20 years, this canyon has teased and intrigued those few seeking to experience its depths. In August 2017 Ben Marr, Chris Korbulic, Gerd and Aniol Serrasolses became the first to enter to the chasm and encounter the waters hidden inside Scimitar Canyon.

THE QUEST TO ENTER SCIMITAR CANYON The Serrasolses brothers, Chris Korbulic, and Benny F Marr are huddled together on a small ledge discussing options. It is day two out of four planned, but the team has been in the Northwest Territories for over a week working on the final logistics of the mission. Their objective: paddle the Scimitar Canyon of the Ram River, a box canyon with 300-meter (1000-foot) vertical walls. Jagged rocks litter the rapid beside them, and 25 feet (seven meters) below is a narrow channel. A foot of water surges through the gap.
