This year the International Canoe Federation launched a new event at the Slalom World Championships in Pau, France: The Extreme Slalom. Initially, this sounds like good news for the sport. Finally, the ICF is recognizing the “extreme” sector of whitewater kayaking, which occupies a large proportion of the media exposure paddle sports receives. But there is a problem: this new discipline is not new. Nor is it extreme. Some argue that Extreme Slalom is nothing other than good old boater-cross with an ICF twist, taking place on primarily artificial, class III whitewater parks. The global extreme-sports market is highly competitive. It is rare for kayaking events or athletes to receive recognition outside of our small, niche industry.
