ADVENTURES IN THE LAKE DISTRICT OF MECKLENBURG

The lake district of Mecklenburg, between Berlin and the Baltic Sea, is a pure treasure for touring paddling. Paddling newbie Franz Güntner discovers the area in the North of Germany for the first time, teaming up with Jens Klatt, who grew up paddling these lakes when they were still on the eastern side of the Iron Curtain.

Loosen Up for a Change Dense reeds build up in front of us, forming a living wall several meters high. “We’re supposed to go through there? “I ask incredulously. But just a few paddle strokes later, a small crevice opens in the filigree reed, and we steer our kayaks through the narrow alley ahead of us. Under the keels are only a few centimeters of water, and we slowly zigzag our way through this labyrinth. Small channels like these are easy to find in the Mecklenburg Lake District, helping to hop from one lake to the other.
