Franz Orsi had no idea how much his life would change when he met SUPKids founder Linzi Hawkins. Their serendipitous encounter brought Orsi out from behind his camera lens to make waves of his own on the Angolan coast. One of the last African countries to gain independence, Angola is still feeling the economic consequences of nearly 40 years of war. While much of the country’s infrastructure was destroyed, Angola has rich natural resources, creating a country of extreme disparity. Can SUP and surf help to bridge this chasm of rich and poor? Luanda, Angola’s capital, where four to six million people live without power or water, is the most expensive city in the world for expats. I came to this country to understand more about it and to see with my own eyes if it is really as it is often depicted: a country torn apart by too many years of war and too much oil.
