The scene takes place in 1984. The Slalom World Cup circuit did not exist at the time and in its place was a series called the Euro Cup. That year, in between two of the stages, an international race was organized at the St Pierre de Boeuf whitewater park near Lyon, France. The race could have been a world championship, because all the top paddlers from every nation were there. For the slalom fans it was an unreal display of talent. Race format at the time had all classes take a first run, followed by a break and then a second run. During the break the course was usually closed to paddlers.
