Leisurely paddling around the corner, we suddenly realized that our friend and guide had disappeared over the horizon line and neither of us had seen where he dropped in. We were deep into the “wild” section of the Wild and Scenic Cache la Poudre River in northern Colorado known as the Big South, and this was a personal first descent for both of us. Already in the current and committed, we just looked at each other and shrugged, dipping our blades into the surging flow like setting an ear to a railroad track to gauge the distance of an oncoming train. Eyeing the defining pyramid rock ahead and the obvious launching point off its left shoulder, my eyes narrowed. The necessary strokes came naturally, landing me safely in the run-out.…
