When I look at the “outdoor adventure community,” I see that the history of outdoor sports is the history of transportation. As humans developed, the need to go from point A to point B became more acute, yet at some juncture, people encountered barriers to their intended destinations. Lakes. Rivers. Mountains. Snow. At first, they sought a way around, but soon more sophisticated techniques developed. Boats were made. Ropes were employed. Objects strapped to feet allowed us to move on snow. Kayaking helped early mankind cross rivers before it allowed for the exploration of unimaginable wild places.
If the history of kayaking lies in transportation, how do I explain the soft voice of the current junior female World Champion telling me she has only ever run a handful of rivers?…
