Standing on a rock, looking down into the rapid, a hand goes up. Middle fingers joined, the other fingers splayed; the hand displaying a gang sign “W," the signal: ‘It’s a bit Welsh…’ Whether on a Nepali riverbank or backed by the rising spray of a BC canyon, to anyone who has spent a little time paddling the creeks and rivers of Wales, this symbol will mean something. It is not intended as a value judgment, but more a general indication of character: the rapid ahead will be steep, technical, and there will probably be something to avoid.
