Meet Dr Tahneal Hawke, a researcher at the Platypus Conservation Initiative (UNSW) and Taronga Conservation Society. Dr Tahneal is dedicated to conserving platypuses! K-Z : Hi Dr Tahneal! What is your work as an ecologist, and as a Senior Research Associate at the School of Biological, Earth, and Environmental Sciences at UNSW? T: My role focuses on platypus conservation, which is a mix of field work and desktop work. Fieldwork involves capturing platypuses using nets to estimate population sizes, taking samples to look at their health, diet, and genetics, and tracking their movements to see how they use their habitats within rivers.
