Featured speaker Abby Bray, graduate of Deer Isle-Stonington High School and a person in recovery, shared her story of trying to find her place in high school, not realizing the choices that she would make that may still impact her today, loss, fear, overdose, hope and recovery. Students learned from OFIP Program Director Ashley Pesek that for the first time in many years, Hancock County saw a reduction in deaths by overdose in 2024: 13 residents, compared to 22 residents lost to the epidemic in 2023.Thanks to Narcan for helping Mainers turn it around—if, according to a press release, fentanyl is to blame for the increase in overdose deaths,During this remembrance, students were challenged to remember the lives lost to overdose in Hancock County, and to ask themselves how they can be a part of the solution. Within minutes of that challenge, 20 boxes of Narcan were scooped up as students demonstrated that they are willing to save a life.
