“In my delving into how I was going to approach David, I was looking at the coercive, controlling elements that are still rife today,” explains Laurie. “There’s a term known as ‘love bombing’, something David does in a textbook manner, and it’s why it makes it so hard for Ruth to leave – sandwiched between terrible acts of abuse are incredibly romantic moments.
“It needs to feel like a love story for these two,” he adds. “And that’s probably the most tricky part of it – knowing everything we know about what happened to Ruth, and David’s part in that was trying to make those moments feel as romantic and as hopeful as possible, in a story that really doesn’t have that much right in it.”…
