Most of the oppositions in society are artificial, and describe life as others would have us live it. Cricket’s contrived fault line is populated on one side by “conservatives” who insist on the inviolability of Test cricket, and on the other by “progressives” who contend they should “move on”. Steve O’Keefe came to prominence on the recent tour of Sri Lanka when there was momentary frisson before the series started at the prospect of Australia fielding a twin-spin attack. Sadly, injury to O’Keefe put paid to that. But who is Stephen O’Keefe, and how did he vault to the forefront of Australia’s selection calculations? ODDLY ENOUGH! In the first innings of the third Test in Colombo (SSC) in August, Sri Lanka started 5 for 26 and Australia with 1 for 267. Who won? Sri Lanka by 163 runs. At times, badly begun is half done! In this Test, Sri Lanka was rescued by their number six and seven batsmen, Dinesh Chandimal (132 runs) and Dhanajaya de Silva (129) who added 211 runs for the sixth wicket after that horror start to the innings. A week earlier in the Gros Islet Test, India were also rescued by their number six and seven batsmen, Ravichandran Ashwin (118) and Wriddhiman Saha (104) who added 213 runs for the sixth wicket after India was 5 for 126. A STEPPE FORWARD The Mongolian Cricket Seed Appeal has managed to raise funds for the country’s first-ever cricket ground. Locals are discovering, and loving, the game, and are turning up excitedly to net sessions to test their skills. Our photos show locals and expatriate players in the nets at MACA Mongolian Friendship Cricket Ground on July 16, in Ulaanbaatar. The local hero of this visionary movement is Battulga Gombo, who founded the Mongolian Amateur Cricket Association in 2007. In 2009, “Tulga” attended Cricket Australia’s Cricket Coach Accreditation Course in Melbourne while his wife studied at Monash University. Years earlier, on a trip to Australia, Tulga, a national judo champion, became intrigued by the game and its ethos. A HORSE FOR ANY COURSE

I’m neither a racing man nor, when it comes to international batsmen, a believer in horses for courses. A top-class batsman should be capable of adapting to whatever conditions are provided and thrive both at home and away. An international batsman should have reached that level because of success against both pace and spin bowling, in a variety of conditions in first-class cricket. Sir Garfield Sobers – the greatest of them all – once described the Sheffield Shield competition as “the toughest cricket outside the Test arena.” Unfortunately, the Shield competition is now a shadow of its former self, due in no small part to an unwieldy international playing schedule. The first Test against England in 1972 at Old Trafford, he went with a very Australian attack and bowled spin on a seaming wicket. Rod Marsh and I kept at him. I felt that I should have been bowling my medium pacers. John Gleeson was bowling at one stage and having played a couple of seasons in county cricket in the late 1960s I felt that my type of bowling would be more difficult to score against and more likely to take wickets. TESTS OF THE BEST

The 2016-17 Australian Test cricket summer is shaping to be as challenging and exciting as any in recent times. An early-season three-Test series against perennial powerhouse South Africa looks daunting enough for a shaky Australian side. Follow that up with the same amount of Tests against a wonderfully talented Pakistan and the home side has its work cut out. There will be challenges on all fronts, with world-class batsmen, fearsome fastbowlers and not least the number-one ranked spinner in the world. TESTS OF THE BEST

This will be Josh Hazlewood’s breakout summer. After a relatively disappointing series against Sri Lanka, Hazlewood will take new learning and a refreshed body into an arduous campaign against two of the best Test-playing nations in the world. Don’t be fooled by his ordinary series against the Sri Lankans. “The Hoff” began well over there, taking 3-21 on the first morning of the first Test. After that, the series was a slog. Even on pace-unfriendly wickets, at the end of a year when Hazlewood has bowled more international deliveries than anyone else in world cricket, his paltry seven wickets in the three Test series came at the relatively decent average of 31. WARNE WIZARDRY VS MUR LI MAGIC

We are the lucky generation. We watched two of the greatest spinners in the history of cricket displaying their contrastingly entrancing skills in the same decades – the 1990s to 2000s. Although both were legendary spinners – the top two wicket-takers in Test annals – no two spinners were ever less similar. Australia’s spin king Shane Warne was a leg-break/googly exponent who snared 708 Test scalps. Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan was an off-break/doosra specialist who went on to become the only bowler to grab 800 Test wickets (795 for Sri Lanka, five for ICC World XI). Both were controversial figures: Warne on and off the field, Murali dividing the cricket world over whether some of his doosras were legitimate. Warne was classical in his action, Murali more unusual. Each respected…

WARNE WIZARDRY VS MUR LI MAGIC

If you think Warne and Murali were good, get a load of the stats for these two Aussies! If either had played 133 Tests, like the highest wicket-taker ever, Murali, Bill O’Reilly would have fallen somewhere between their tallies. Clarrie Grimmett would have far exceeded Murali’s. Either would have been considered the game’s greatest bowler of any sort. The only bowler likely to challenge O’Reilly on posterity’s scoreboard, his partner-in-crime Grimmett, was selected at 33 years of age. In 37 Tests, the leg-spinner took 10 wickets in a match seven times, and five in an innings 21 times! Altogether he took 216 wickets at 24.21.…

FIELDINGS FIENDS OF AUSTRALIA AND SOUTH AFRICA

Jonty Rhodes once attributed South Africa’s – and Australia’s – superior fielding to superior fields, which were well-grassed and bounced relatively truly, even at the lower levels (though we suspect the South African grounds are better at suburban level). There are many great fielders we couldn’t include due to space or lack of images – this is, after all, a gallery. Between South Africa’s Bland and Rhodes, for instance was Gary Kirsten. Anyone who was at the SCG in the 1972-73 series against Pakistan will never forget Aussie Ross Edwards’ unbelievable intercept to dismiss Sadiq Mohammad after Sadiq rocketed one off to the boundary. Vince Lombardi, the legendary American football coach, once summarily refuted the old saw that “practice makes perfect.” Said the crusty old mentor, “Perfect practice makes perfect.” Who can argue? Batting in cricket is one of the more difficult sporting arts to master, for so many reasons. Many of those reasons have to do with practice opportunities.
