Apologies to men like Herbert Sutcliffe and Michael Vaughan, who both had amazing series in 1924-25 and 2003-03 respectively, in losing sides, but this gallery is about those opening bats who won series for their teams. It takes an authoritative batsman to open an innings against a hungry pack of predators and not only survive, but put his stamp on an entire series. Here are nine outstanding examples.
