In the summer of 2013 Stuart Broad was the most hated man in Australia. His crime had been not to walk when an umpire hadn’t noticed he’d edged the ball to first slip during the first Test against Australia at Trent Bridge four months earlier, which England would win on their way to retaining the Ashes. It did not seem to matter that, Adam Gilchrist aside, almost every Australian batsman would have done exactly the same.
