HEATHER YOUNG ON WHY WE NEED TO TAKE SOME TIME OUT

Like so many of us, I find it really hard to relax. When thinking about having a little R&R, my mind immediately starts scrolling through my personal list of go-to downtime activities, which I think reveals a lot about my ability to stop and do nothing. Even my relaxation mode involves the word ‘activities’! I can spend hours working my way relentlessly through my to-do list, but I’ll still feel guilty if I’m found taking a ten-minute break to lounge on the sofa. I’ll jump up as if I’ve been caught doing something I shouldn’t, when my logical brain knows it’s perfectly fine and actually no-one is judging me!
