Antarctica is the world’s last great wilderness and Earth’s coldest, windiest, highest and driest continent. Around 98% of the land area lies buried beneath kilometres of snow and ice, yet Antarctica is – paradoxically – a desert. In fact, it is so inhospitable that no one lives there permanently, despite it being 25% bigger than Europe. This frozen continent remained unexplored until the 19th century.
