Punchy colour and playful architectural references are the potent ingredients in this revival of a 1990s home in suburban Melbourne.

For a project that adds only a new entry vestibule with bike store to this nineties design, Espy House by Wowowa Architecture and Interiors punches far above its weight. The existing home, inspired by one of Glenn Murcutt’s coastal houses, has a split personality. At the front, it sits within the frame of a typical suburban street, but halfway down the block, the site plunges more than 20 metres down to the Maribyrnong River, which winds through the northwestern suburbs of Melbourne. The team at Wowowa was tickled by this little tribute to Murcutt in a suburban context and thought they’d bring a touch of Melbourne nineties to the facade via some Edmond-and-Corrigan-esque shape and colour.
