AVIVID rainbow arches over the Danestown yard of racehorse trainer Gavin Cromwell on a squally February morning. A pot of gold must be somewhere within the expanse of stables, lush pastures and pristine gallops but actually this quiet corner of Co Meath is already enjoying a wealth of riches as the former farrier and his industrious team continue to fire out winner after winner. The team smashed their previous seasonal record of 72 winners the day before our arrival. They have enjoyed success in major prizes in recent years including the Champion Hurdle with Espoir D’Allen, back-to-back Stayers’ Hurdles with Flooring Porter, the Welsh Grand National with Raz De Maree and they’ve even tasted Royal Ascot success.
