The young event rider, who suffered a serious spinal injury in a fall last year, talks to Pippa Roome about her journey so far and what the future holds

“MENTALLY, I’m still the same person. I’m just sat down,” says Saffron Cresswell as we wrap up our interview. Last spring, Saffron was a promising young event rider, with medals to her name and a yard of horses. All that changed when she and Vivendi Hero fell on the under-25 track at Bramham in June, a fall that left Saffron paralysed from the chest down. “I’m keen to share that spinal injuries can happen to anyone, doing anything, at any age,” says the 23-year-old. “I didn’t appreciate that until I was on a ward with 32 other people in my position.
