Kim Thomé’s playful approach to colour, structure and geometry made for a natural fit for his latest collaborations with Atelier Swarovski. Emilie Yabut-Razon caught up with the London-based Norwegian designer at Design Shanghai

Kim Thomé’s creations are an intriguing mix of geometric elements and optical play. His largest project to date, unveiled at London’s V&A Museum, was Zotem, a towering 18-metre installation embedded with more than 600 large, dazzling custom-built crystals set against a moving roll of brightly coloured fabric, creating a prism effect. The piece was so compelling that Swarovski decided to bring it to Asia through Design Shanghai. This year, Thomé continues his work at Atelier Swarovski but scales it down with Plinth, a collection of stainless-steel candelabras sitting on crystal halos, and Donuts, a series of palm-sized candle holders made of crystals, each creating a different colour pattern.
