One Hong Kong couple pushed the boundaries on a new-build home in Niseko, Japan, creating an ultra-luxurious haven that’s perfect in snow or shine, writes Tamsin Bradshaw

Bitter winds coming off the plains of Siberia, temperatures reaching lows of minus 20 degrees Celsius and six metres of glistening snow on the ground—these are just some of the challenges that Mike Alexander and his partner Luciana Palmisano faced when they built their family home in Annupuri, Niseko, on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. “How you actually build in Japan has been very much a part of our learning journey,” says Palmisano, an independent marketing consultant, property developer and committee chair for children’s charity OneSky. “We came in saying we wanted swimming pools, bifold doors and skylights—and all the locals could think about is the fact that it’s minus 20 degrees outside.” Palmisano and Alexander had a vision for their Niseko home and it wasn’t exactly the norm for…
