Old meets new

Paul Cashin Architects transformed a traditional home with this striking, modern extension, which takes its design cues from the local vernacular

AMAZING HOMES The desire for more space prompted this transformational two-storey extension to a 500-year-old Grade II-listed cottage in Hampshire. “The house features a beautiful inglenook but also suffers with very low ceilings, a poorly laid out upper level and no storage space for the family,” begins Paul Cashin, director at Paul Cashin Architects. One of the main goals was to create an addition that would sit in complete contrast to the original building. Inside, it would accommodate a new kitchen-diner with a spacious master suite upstairs. However, creating a suitable connection between the existing cottage and the extension was one design challenge they faced. “The answer was to create a subservient barn form interpreted in a contemporary way, with a glass link from old to new,” says Paul.
