AMAZING HOMES The handmade glazed tiles that clad the external extension of this Victorian home in north London were designed to draw upon the homeowners’ love of municipal buildings and public infrastructure. “In these buildings glazed tiles are commonly used as a protective layer to prolong the lifespan of a building, while also conveying a feeling of richness on a budget,” says Catrina Stewart, founding director, Office S&M Architects. Custom-made for the project by Material Assemble using extruded clay and hand craftsmanship, the tiles give a playfulness to the space, while also ensuring the home is hardwearing. Users of the Hammersmith & City line might recognise the shade of pink as the same colour that adorns stations on the London Underground, and the curved corner tiles are exactly scaled-up versions…
