For most sites, the essential piece of kit, and one of the first that will be required, is a digger. On a clear site with plenty of room around the outside of the footings, a JCB is unequalled as its manoeuvrability allows it to dig, turn and load. What it doesn’t have, however, is the capacity of the tracked machines to dig and load through 360°.
On a tight site, the ability to be able to dig and straddle a trench while loading a lorry, or dumper, off to one side, is invaluable. On a complicated footing, for example, a tracked machine may be essential simply because of the fact that it can cross already dug trenches without collapsing them.
