Original timber windows are a thing of beauty, and a prized feature in old homes. In all but extreme cases, they can be rescued rather than replaced. Natasha Brinsmead explains how

Tearing out original timber windows to replace them with a modern alternative is never a good idea — in fact it is pretty much guaranteed to obliterate the house’s character and to deter potential buyers too. (Unless, of course, they are so far beyond repair that you aim to invest in high-quality versions which resemble the originals.)
