When looking to explain the enduring popularity of certain elements of a self-build, it’s prudent to dive back into the history of the material. For clay tiles, that can be traced back thousands of years. “History records that clay tiles were introduced to Britain by the Romans and have been in constant use ever since,” says Steven Blewitt, operations director at clay tile manufacturer Sahtas.
What has changed over the years is the quality control that modern industry is able to apply to the manufacturing process. “The manufacture of clay tiles has retained the basic methods over centuries, including excavation, forming and firing,” adds Steven Blewitt. “It is the means by which this process has evolved that enables modern-day clay tiles to be produced to consistently high standards.”
