Nestled into the clifftops above the sloping and shingled coastline of Shaldon in South Devon sits a sizeable contemporary home with panoramic views of the English Channel and surrounded by a wooded valley. “The clients approached us with the brief to replace a large existing dwelling with a new home that connects with the landscape,” says Ian Phillips of VESP architects. “Both in the immediate sense, with the gardens, but also with the surrounding views.”
A 550m ² house had the potential to look imposing on the landscape so a design that respected the topography of the site with a more articulated massing of the layout was required.
