Architect Magnus Strom of Strom Architects shares one of his favourite design ideas

Clerestory windows have been used as a means of drawing in light from above in places of worship for thousands of years. This architectural feature was also used frequently in mid-century homes in Europe to create a clear distinction between the roof plane and the wall plane. In the Hurst House project (pictured), which we worked on with John Pardy Architects, we introduced clerestory windows at ground level to wrap around one section of the building. It allows you to read the first floor, which spans the length of the house and touches the exterior garden wall, as a separate volume — as such, this upper level appears as if it is floating.
