Whether you opt for a hedge, fence or wall, getting your boundary treatment right on a new build or renovation project can pay unexpected dividends, says Mark Brinkley

Almost all building plots have to have marked boundaries. Privacy screening is frequently imposed as a sale condition, and increasingly planners are demanding boundary structures that meet their approval. It can spoil a development to put cheap and thoughtless fencing in place, although it can be very expensive to create good-looking boundaries. Timber Fencing The simplest and cheapest way to mark a boundary is to use timber fencing. If the fence is needed to provide privacy from neighbours, it will need to be at least 1.8m high. Requirements will be rather different if you want to keep animals or children enclosed.
