The windows of Charlie Luxton’s self-build are in and the structure is now watertight — and plenty of thought has gone into the installation

The windows have arrived, and they have been fitted, which is an enormous step forward as the building is now watertight. This means we can begin the drying out process inside and start first fix of the mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system, electrics and plumbing. Windows are integral to the performance of a house, and it’s an aspect of the build I’ve had to think carefully about. The key thing about the windows is not only the quality of the unit you specify, but also the way they are installed. Obviously you need to get the quality right, though! We’re using triple-glazed Internorm windows, which have a thermally broken timber-hybrid frame, which means there’s a timber substructure with an aluminium exterior.
