In the first of a new series where renovators and self-builders share advice, Tracy and Steve Head discuss using an existing annexe as a test bed for their new barn-style home

Our self-build project officially got underway in July 2014, but we had moved into the annexe months before. The plan was to demolish the existing Colt bungalow on site and build a new barn-style home on the footprint. So we needed a place to live while the work took place, but also somewhere to test out our design ideas: the annexe worked perfectly. We fully renovated the annexe before we started the build knowing that it had to be ready before we demolished the house. The annexe was quite tight with us and our two boys in there, but we made it work.
