Q What do we need to consider in order to leave the new roof ‘beams’ exposed in our loft conversion? We are planning a roof-lift loft conversion and have plans drawn up by an architect, but not yet submitted for planning approval. What structural changes would be needed? How could we insulate? Would this be expensive (we have a limited budget)? Peter Penrice, London A The first thing to consider when raising the ridge height is whether anyone else on your road has. If they have, this usually sets a precedent which means you shouldn’t have many issues with your planning application.
