Architectural designer Tony Holt explains how he helped one client turn their chalet bungalow in Dorset into an impressive family home with an American influence

This former chalet bungalow is located on a highly sought-after residential road in Dorset. Our client, who had owned the property for several years, approached us with a challenging brief which included an increase in the habitable floor area from 170m to around 340m in order to create a long-term family home, on a budget of just £225,000. During the design phase, we explored the options of a new build or remodelling the existing property. It is always challenging to decide which is more beneficial financially and practically.
