Adding a double-height extension can maximise a compact site, creating space on both levels to create a balanced layout — these self-builders show how it’s done

Stacking up By stacking and stepping four brick extensions around their semi-detached Georgian home, Lama and Tim Moss have created an exciting and dynamic new layout. One of the most dramatic changes to the house is the new two-storey side extension at the front, which seems unassuming from the street but creates enough space for a triple-height staircase with a handcrafted oak handrail that sweeps up all three storeys. “We weren’t able to make the house physically much larger, as there was already an extension to the rear,” says Tim. “The challenge was to make it feel bigger, and opening up the full height was the way to achieve this.
