Architects Cassell Tarring took a sloping site with a tight footprint, overcoming each of the design challenges to create a unique family home

From the outside, the design of this striking modern home looks relatively straightforward. But the contemporary, cube-like form belies the structural complexities and innovative architectural solutions involved. “We were briefed to create the design for a spacious family home,” says Michael Tarring, a founding director at Cassell Tarring (www.casselltarring.com). “On paper, the plot was small and inaccessible and densely populated with trees.” Undeterred, Cassell Tarring turned each of the site’s features into a unique design opportunity. “We had to fit a floor area of over 200m² into a tight footprint,” says Michael. “That’s how we came up with the idea of taking the main living space right up into the trees, with a roof terrace at the top.” The main living area of the house, which is formed from two interlocking boxes,…
