Councillors express concerns over housing targets The government’s ambitious plan to deliver 1.5 million new homes in the next five years has been criticised by councillors across England. A new survey from the County Councils Network (CCN) found that while seven in 10 county and rural unitary councils support nationally set targets, none of them back the target for their county area, with 94% stating it is excessive. The new analysis highlights that county and rural areas will see a dramatic increase in the number of houses built under the mandatory targets. On average, such areas will see a 56% rise in the number of new homes required per year — that’s more than 64,000 properties.
